Informative Essay

Have you ever wondered if a sudden change could change your thought process? Often, experiencing an important event brings about the change in thought. In the play “A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley” and in the stories “At the Crossroads” and “Profile: Malala Yousafzai”, Scrooge, Nick Kleckner, and Malala Yousafzai all undergo a major change as the result of sudden events in their lives.

In the play “A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley”, the character of Scrooge undergoes a change from a cruel miser to a joyful, generous individual as a result of visits from three spirits. The ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future show Scrooge events from his life that causes him to realize that making changes in his life will positively affect him and others around him. “Spirit! Hear me! I am not the man I was. I will not be the man I would have been but for this intercourse. Why show me this, if I am past all hope?” As a result, Scrooge has learned that being generous and caring is the key to a more meaningful life. (Source: Horovitz #284)

In the story “At the Crossroads”, Nick Kleckner undergoes a change from being pressured, stressed, and full of anxiety to a less stressful person who appreciates the different aspects of life more. Nick decided to go on a 2,500-mile long walk from Florida to California because he was hoping the walk would change his life. “He hoped the journey would change his life, but he had no idea how!” Nick has learned to be a generous and giving person on his journey, and overall enjoys life much more. In the story “Profile: Malala Yousafzai”, Malala undergoes a change from being a shy school girl who would not speak up and express her feelings verbally to an outspoken, passionate woman as a result of a Taliban gunman. A Taliban gunman shot Malala’s left brow and the bullet traveled underneath the skin. “She became more outspoken on the subject of the girls right to education.” As a result, Malala changed after the shooting, and she then carried on a campaign and took it around the world. In conclusion, this supports that Scrooge, Nick Kleckner, and Malala Yousafzai all experienced a sudden event. This sudden event changed the way they thought. Without this sudden event their lives could be different.
